Dust Collection System Sizing Calculator
What is Dust Collection System Sizing?
Dust collection system sizing is the process of determining the exact physical capacity your baghouse needs to safely and effectively filter the dust from your facility. At its core, this means calculating the “Required Filter Cloth Area.” This total surface area dictates how large the collector housing must be, how many bags it will hold, and how well it can process the incoming contaminated air.
How to Use This Calculator
⦿ Enter the System Airflow (CFM): Input the total volume of air the dust collection system needs to extract from your facility.
⦿ Enter the Target Air-to-Cloth Ratio: Input your desired filtration velocity (e.g., 4.0 for typical nuisance dust, or lower for fine/sticky particulates).
⦿ Calculate: Click the calculate button to determine the exact total square footage of filter media required to build or size your baghouse. You can then use the buttons below the calculator to email yourself a PDF summary of the results or request a free system sizing consultation from our engineering team.
Understanding the Formula
Required Filter Cloth Area = Total CFM ÷ Target Air-to-Cloth Ratio
This formula reverses the standard Air-to-Cloth ratio equation. Instead of finding the ratio of an existing system, it allows you to input the airflow you know you need (CFM) and the optimal ratio for your specific dust application, outputting the exact square footage of filter cloth the new baghouse must contain to meet those parameters.
Importance of Proper System Sizing
Understanding and accurately calculating static pressure is critical for selecting the correct exhaust fan and motor. It ensures the system has enough suction to pull dust from the source through the ductwork and the filter bags. Underestimating static pressure leads to weak airflow, dust settling in pipes, and inadequate collection, while overestimating can result in oversized equipment, wasted energy, and excessive wear on the filters.
Note: This calculation is a helpful reference point, but factors like duct layout changes, temperature, elevation, and dust loading also affect performance. Always consult an expert like Baghouse.com for accurate sizing.
