Differential pressure primarily tells you the resistance across the filters. Poor airflow can still result from fan performance, duct restrictions, closed dampers, system imbalance, air leaks, process modifications, or even an inaccurate DP reading. CFM needs to be measured independently.<\/strong><\/p><p>Sometimes we receive a call from one of our customers because dust isn&#8217;t being captured at the hoods. We ask about differential pressure and hear: <em>\u201cDP looks great. Less air passing through the filters can also produce a relatively low pressure drop. So a reading that looks like \u201cclean filters\u201d may actually coexist with insufficient system airflow.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df3491b elementor-widget elementor-widget-testimonial\" data-id=\"df3491b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"testimonial.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-testimonial-content\">\u201cWhat's your differential pressure?\u201d is one of the first questions I ask. But if the complaint is poor pickup, I also want airflow measurements. A fan doesn&#8217;t simply \u201cmake 20,000 CFM.\u201d It produces airflow according to the resistance of the system and its fan curve.<\/strong><\/p><p>If the system resistance has increased because of duct modifications, buildup, new equipment, additional fittings, or other restrictions, the fan operating point can shift, and actual CFM can fall. That intersection is the fan\u2019s actual operating point. In this example, the fan is operating at about 60,000 ACFM and 9 in. w.g. of static pressure.<\/p><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"421\">The four curves show different things:<\/p><ul data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"1140\"><li data-section-id=\"s4zih8\" data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"611\">\u29bf <strong>Black \u2013 Static Pressure:<\/strong> How much pressure the fan can produce at different airflow rates. As airflow increases beyond a certain point, the fan\u2019s available static pressure decreases.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"969l36\" data-start=\"612\" data-end=\"845\">\u29bf <strong>Blue \u2013 System Resistance:<\/strong> How much resistance the dust collection system creates at different airflow rates. As you try to move more air through ducts, filters, hoods, elbows, and other components, resistance increases rapidly.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1qvbp97\" data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"990\">\u29bf <strong>Green \u2013 Shaft Power:<\/strong> Approximately how much power the fan requires at each airflow. At the operating point shown, it is around 120 HP.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"5pxw7u\" data-start=\"991\" data-end=\"1140\">\u29bf <strong>Orange \u2013 Static Efficiency:<\/strong> How efficiently the fan is operating. At the operating point, the graph indicates an efficiency of roughly 70%.<\/li><\/ul><p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1607\">A fan does not automatically deliver its rated CFM. Its actual airflow depends on the resistance of the entire dust collection system.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-16d4aae elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"16d4aae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/youtu.be\\\/T6sf-uZOn_s&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-video\"><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-04345e0 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"04345e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-03706aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"03706aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Could the Ductwork Be Restricting Airflow?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e2716a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0e2716a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We have inspected systems where the collector received most of the attention while the real problem was several hundred feet upstream.<\/p><p><strong>Look for dust accumulation, crushed or damaged duct, partially closed dampers, sharp transitions, poor branch entries, excessive flexible duct, and modifications made since the original system was balanced.<\/strong><\/p><p>Adding branches is especially important. Changing one branch can affect airflow in the others, and adding new dust sources to an existing system can reduce air volume and duct velocity in the original branches.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-373ba71 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"373ba71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/www.youtube.com\\\/watch?v=CTpcQrD7JOs&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-video\"><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a9610d8 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"a9610d8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7be09be elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7be09be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What Should I Measure?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c3b82d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c3b82d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If you&#8217;re troubleshooting this condition, get three pieces of information together:<\/p><p><strong>Collector DP + actual airflow + system static pressure.<\/strong><\/p><p>Then compare them with the system&#8217;s original design or commissioning data.<\/p><p>For example, suppose a system was designed for 20,000 CFM at 10 in. w.g. total static pressure. Today the collector DP is a comfortable 3 in. w.g., but field testing shows only 14,500 CFM. Changing the filters because the pickup is poor probably isn&#8217;t where we&#8217;d start.
